The Danger of Contentment
Year of Creation: 2017 | Published: 2017-09-03 | Theme: A young traveller's search for her identity

She is a girl
She is lucky
A girl with experience beyond her years
She has a beautiful family, home and peers

She is 19
But she has seen more than most
She has courage and adventure
But perhaps a dangerous dose

In every country she is different
In every photo she is new
She connects with all people
And she is offended by few

She finds the humour in all
And feels the empathy alike
Her style is undistinctive
And little does she dislike

She is addicted to life
She is dependent on its thrills
She must always be busy
Because boredom gives her chills

She would study any subject
And she likes playing every sport
She loves rap and the opera
And every cause she could support

She has died her hair every colour
And she owns every kind of shoe
She likes all patterns and all textures
And she can understand every view

She is basic yet eccentric,
She can always fit in
She can change her exterior
Because there is nothing permanent within

She is difficult to distress
And she knows not of disappointment
She is always relaxed
But within lies something poignant

Her friends are extensive
And her family is strong
But to be content amongst all
Is to know not where she belongs

She has touched every continent
She speaks their languages too
She is both local and foreign
But doesn’t know where to pursue

She seldom dislikes people
But she knows not who she loves
She’s a youthful traveller with freedom
But she flies alone like a dove

To travel is to broaden
To discover and to seek
But to seek is to discover
That her desire is weak

She knows much of the world
of its and its beauty and its peace
And whilst she appreciates her privilege
She longs for a passion and she longs for her niche

The blessing of liking all
And of being liked herself
Makes her vulnerable to contentment
And losing contentment itself

She feels most comfortable
When she is silent
In a room, full of noise
Because to be in a room that is silent
She must discover what she enjoys

To know one world makes it easy
To discover who you are
But when you have experienced many worlds
It makes one’s identity quite bizarre

From the top of the mountains
To the bottom of the sea
She is at home in all nature
Alone with nature she feels free

Back in society she feels pressure
To define who she is
She doesn’t know one identity
She does not know who she is
She is free and she is privileged
But she believes she is lost
She must understand that she is complex
Her identity can’t fit in one box.
