When whale sharks arrive to the shallow waters of Wolf Island, the remoras dangle in the shark’s eyes, sides and stomach like thistles grown long and slim. Think about it: a 30-centimetre long parasite grabs onto your skin and you can’t remove it by yourself. But only female whale sharks circle the shallow waters of Wolf Island.
The whale shark goes round the island once, a second time, and stops. Then silky sharks attack simultaneously from both sides. When a silky shark tears a remora off the belly of the whale shark, a piece of stomach skin is torn, too. The female leaves the cleaning station bloody but thankfully.
The male whale shark’s penis hangs out under its tail as big as a big remora. It’s easy to imagine what would happen to it in these feasts. Therefore, a man can never get rid of his parasites.
