The sky is clear today and visibility extends to the far-off horizon.
I am captivated by the sweep of landscape with its burnt sienna earth.
In the distance a swirl of dust appears precluding any perceptible sound.
Quite slowly images begin to emerge and I know it is the herd.

They approach quietly in single file along a well worn ancient pathway.
These handsome creatures come from a blood line that is centuries old.
They have ancestors that were turned loose by the Spanish settlers.
Soon I am surrounded by these wild free roaming gallant creatures.

A gray mare protects a chestnut colt with a white blaze on its forehead.
The others show their curiosity with head nods and other movements.
I cannot overlook such beauty and innocence on this desert landscape.
Soon, they quietly leave and I ponder their unrivaled magnificence.
